Collodion Portraits in Berlin — Tintype & Ambrotype

Handcrafted, one-of-a-kind photographs using the wet plate collodion process — an experience to remember and an image that will last for generations.

Das Verfahren

No camera in the world can capture what is happening here

I pour collodion onto a glass or aluminum plate, dip it into a silver bath, and place it in the light of a large-format camera. After a few seconds of exposure, I develop the image in my darkroom — and your face appears as a silver image on metal.

The wet plate collodion process dates back to 1851. Every photograph is one of a kind: non-reproducible, non-digital, and non-repeatable. What you hold in your hands is not a copy—it is the original.

Consultation

We’ll discuss your wishes, ideas, and the best format — via email, phone, or in the studio. If you’re unsure, I’d be happy to advise you.

The Session

You’ll come to the studio in Berlin-Wedding. I’ll prepare each plate right in front of you: pouring the collodion, applying the silver solution, exposing the plate, and developing it. You’ll watch your image take shape—in real time. Depending on the package you choose, we’ll create several images and experiment with lighting and composition.

Postprocessing

The finished panels are secured, moistened, and sealed with a protective varnish. This takes about a week. Let me know if you need your portrait quicker.

Your unique photograph

You can pick up your framed picture at the studio — or I can send it to you. What you hold in your hands is the only copy in existence.

Häufige Fragen

Everything you need to know

What exactly is a tintype?
A tintype is a handmade photograph on an aluminum plate, produced using the wet plate collodion process. Each image is one-of-a-kind — there are no copies. The process dates back to 1851 and produces silver images with a distinctive, timeless character.
What is the difference between a tintype and an ambrotype?
Both are created using the same process. A tintype is an image on aluminum with a warm, metallic sheen. An ambrotype is an image on glass and has a distinctive delicacy and depth. Both are one-of-a-kind.
How much does a collodion portrait cost?
Walk-in portraits start at €95 for the small format (13×18 cm). Custom studio portraits start at €490 (the “Duo” package) and go up to €1,100 for the ultra-large format on glass (the “Heirloom” package). All packages include scanning and framing.
How long does a session last?
Walk-in portraits take about 30 minutes. Custom studio portraits take about 90 minutes—enough time for multiple shots and different lighting setups.
What should I wear?
Collodion reacts differently to colors than digital cameras: blue appears very light, while red appears very dark. Patterns usually work well. I’d be happy to advise you on this during our preliminary consultation.
Can I bring my children?
Yes — I have experience working with children as young as 3 months old. Depending on the format, exposure times in the studio range from 3 to 5 seconds. Please contact me in advance so we can coordinate everything.
Where is the studio located?
In Berlin-Wedding: Reinickendorfer Str. 116, 13347 Berlin. Easily accessible by public transportation.
How do I make a booking?
Through my online booking system, by email to info@maximilianzeitler.com, or by phone at +49 160 550 38 66. You can also just stop by the studio.
