Collodion Portraits in Berlin — Tintype & Ambrotype
Handcrafted, one-of-a-kind photographs using the wet plate collodion process — an experience to remember and an image that will last for generations.
No camera in the world can capture what is happening here
I pour collodion onto a glass or aluminum plate, dip it into a silver bath, and place it in the light of a large-format camera. After a few seconds of exposure, I develop the image in my darkroom — and your face appears as a silver image on metal.
The wet plate collodion process dates back to 1851. Every photograph is one of a kind: non-reproducible, non-digital, and non-repeatable. What you hold in your hands is not a copy—it is the original.
What others say about the experience
„I had Max create an ambrotype portrait of me. I was able to witness the entire process: from preparing the glass plate to the magical moment of development. If you’re looking for photographs with a truly unique look, you’ll find an accomplished photographer here who is passionate about his craft.”
— Andromeo, 13x18cm ambrotype, 2025„Here at Max, authentic images are created using traditional craftsmanship techniques. The results are one-of-a-kind pieces with a striking impact. Max explains everything clearly, and you’re welcome to watch the developing process in the darkroom.”

Consultation
We’ll discuss your wishes, ideas, and the best format — via email, phone, or in the studio. If you’re unsure, I’d be happy to advise you.
The Session
You’ll come to the studio in Berlin-Wedding. I’ll prepare each plate right in front of you: pouring the collodion, applying the silver solution, exposing the plate, and developing it. You’ll watch your image take shape—in real time. Depending on the package you choose, we’ll create several images and experiment with lighting and composition.
Postprocessing
The finished panels are secured, moistened, and sealed with a protective varnish. This takes about a week. Let me know if you need your portrait quicker.
Your unique photograph
You can pick up your framed picture at the studio — or I can send it to you. What you hold in your hands is the only copy in existence.
